Following graduation from high school, he attended the American Academy of Mortuary Science at the behest of his father who was a licensed mortician and owner of the Patrick J Conte Funeral Home. His father commented that he would always have the business to fall back on as a contingency plan, especially if things went awry in pursuing a medical career. Since his Dad was paying for his education, he reluctantly acquiesced.  Dr. Conte was bestowed the Dean’s award upon graduation.

The next school year he entered Seton Hall University pre-medical program. But his fourth year of pre-med was interrupted by military service and he never completed the academic year.
